Frank and I have known each other for many years, working on projects all around the U.S. I’ve always admired his fashion sense and leaned in a bit closer to listen when he talked about marketing. Since quarantine, Frank has continually filled my social media feeds with photos of the empty streets of New York, military inspired fashions, and of course, a 6-foot wig! Okay, it’s probably only 2 feet, but it’s a sight to behold.
When I began to think about creating a place for freelancers and small business owners to connect during quarantine, even though I did not yet have a full concept, I knew I had to interview Frank.
Connect. Share. Repeat. is my new series where I host HONEST conversations with freelancers, small business owners, and industry leaders about the effects COVID-19 has had on their business. I will host these live conversations every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on my Facebook & Instagram pages.
In this first interview we tackled some quarantine biggies: What to do during the down time, ways to market your business and brand, thoughts on price adjustments, and of course, fashion.
Here are a few highlights from the interview:
During this down time, Frank explained that he has taken the time to update his website, LinkedIn, and social media pages. Between his busy career, getting his degree in costume studies, and creating fashion content, he rarely had time to add project photos to his website. Now, everything is up to date. He suggested that it is important to be ready to go, professionally wise, when that “green light” goes off. So, now is the best time to get all those pesky tasks out of the way.

“Post! Post! Post! Posting on LinkedIn and posting on Instagram… I think those things are key.”
Everyone’s eyeballs are on the Internet in some form right now! Posting content is Frank’s number one marketing strategy. Take this time to market yourself.
“I’ve been looking into ways to incorporate fashion into my quarantine time. For me, a big part of that has been still getting dressed up on almost a daily basis, even if it’s just for the grocery store or to get some fresh air.”

“A big part of being a freelancer is knowing your worth and standing by that. Knowing what you bring to the table should not be an excuse to lower your rates.”
Many companies are encountering financial hits this season due to COVID-19, which lead me to a tough question: Will you be lowering your prices? I think you can tell by his quote, the answer was no. I believe once one person does it, a domino effect occurs in the industry. Come on guys! Create a pact with your freelance friends right now- No lower prices! No lower prices!
“The season is cancelled, so now the fashion is up to you… It’s important to stay fashionable, even in a pandemic. It brings me happiness.”
Although I have been sporting my fair share of lounge wear, I have to say it felt good to be in a full face of makeup and a sequined dress for this interview! I mean, we are stylists for God’s sake! Start setting trends! Of course our masks should also be made of sequins, and they should be in 10 different colors! According to Frank, “Masks are THE fashion accessory of Spring/ Summer 2020, and they are going nowhere!”
